Frequently Asked Questions about Creating a Task Force

How many members should be on a task force? Kids Voting recommends at least seven members be on the Community Task Force. While some smaller programs can run a successful Kids Voting project with less than seven members, average size programs will need seven members.

Who should serve as Chair? The task force chair should be someone who is a respected and involved leader within the business and volunteer community; is enthusiastic about Kids Voting; has good communication skills; knows the area’s civic, educational, political, and corporate leadership; can manage complex and detailed projects; can envision political ramifications of task force policies and decisions; and is innovative and enjoys pioneering projects.

Should there be a Vice-Chair? Treasurer?Yes, the ideal situation would be to have a Vice-Chair and Treasurer. The Treasurer would be responsible for the reporting of finances to the state office (no CPA or accounting degree required), act as the contact on bank account, write checks, etc.

Should the task force have committees devoted to one specific area of the program? Yes, the most efficient model consists of sub-committees that work on the following aspects of the Kids Voting program: School Relations, Finance/Fundraising, Public Relations, Elections, and Volunteer Recruitment.

Where do I find people to be on my Task Force? Your community has all of the people that you need to run a successful program. All you have to do is look in the right places. Task force members should be recruited with a specific role in mind for each. The following are categories of expertise and areas we recommend to be represented on a Kids Voting Community Task Force along with their corresponding committee assignments:

• Business/Major Corporations – utilities, banks, franchise operations (Finance/Fundraising committee)
• Media- newspaper, broadcast (Public Relations committee)
• Community/Civic Organizations- League of Women Voters, Junior League, Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. (Volunteer Recruitment committee)
• Education- PTO, superintendents, principals, teachers, students (School Relations committee)
• Finance and Legal – banks. accounting and law firms (Finance/Fundraising committee)
• Government- election officials, honorary board members (Elections committee)
